With demographic anxiety and political rhetoric fueling discrimination and hostility, the Ford Foundation<\/a>\u2014together with the New York Community Trust, the New York Foundation, and Philanthropy New York\u2014hosted a discussion on\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cConfronting Islamophobia in America Today.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Leaders from the nonprofit, government, social service, and philanthropic sectors came together to discuss the major issues affecting these minority communities, and to strategize about how to advance inclusion. Here are some highlights from the day\u2019s conversations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are at risk of failing a generation of American Muslims<\/h3>\n

Participants agreed that discrimination and bigotry are worse for American Muslims today than they were in the months following 9\/11. And as\u00a0Linda Sarsour<\/a>, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, stressed, there is now a generation of young American Muslims who don\u2019t have any reference to a pre-9\/11 America, who only know and experience an America \u201cthat doesn\u2019t love them, doesn\u2019t embrace them, [and] doesn\u2019t think they belong here.\u201d If the \u201cacceptable bigotry\u201d we\u2019re seeing continues\u2014if more Americans don\u2019t speak out against Islamophobia, and if policymakers and government continue to fall short in providing support for the community\u2014we will fail this generation of young American Muslims.<\/p>\n
