Here are some highlights from the day\u2019s conversations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>We are at risk of failing a generation of American Muslims<\/h3>\n<p>Participants agreed that discrimination and bigotry are worse for American Muslims today than they were in the months following 9\/11. And as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabamericanny.org\/lindasarsour\/\">Linda Sarsour<\/a>, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, stressed, there is now a generation of young American Muslims who don\u2019t have any reference to a pre-9\/11 America, who only know and experience an America \u201cthat doesn\u2019t love them, doesn\u2019t embrace them, [and] doesn\u2019t think they belong here.\u201d If the \u201cacceptable bigotry\u201d we\u2019re seeing continues\u2014if more Americans don\u2019t speak out against Islamophobia, and if policymakers and government continue to fall short in providing support for the community\u2014we will fail this generation of young American Muslims.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Are we going to fail a generation of American Muslims?\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5fPoY02ckxw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Tackiling anti-Muslim bigotry can\u2019t be the only priority<\/h3>\n<p>Typically, we see the needs of American Muslims framed in one of two ways: in terms of national security reform, or anti-Muslim bigotry. Leaders are constantly stamping out prejudice-fueled fires, diverting attention and resources from equally pressing problems facing the community: issues like poverty, illiteracy, and the threat of deportation. Communities need an approach that addresses all of those issues, and resources to help develop the kind of educational and leadership programs that can build resilience amid conflict.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anti-Muslim bigotry isn&#039;t the only problem\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OAFnvbkB2ps?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>American Muslim\u2019s identities are complex, and about more than being Muslim<\/h3>\n<p>At a time when most young Americans have the luxury of time to discover who they are, Muslim youth are often presumed to be representing their community, and bear the burden of responsibility that comes with that. Too often, that means other parts of their lives\u2014everything from going to the movies to struggling with poverty\u2014are invisible. \u201cWe always have to know what\u2019s going on because we constantly need to justify or explain ourselves and our [Muslim] ideologies and beliefs,\u201d said Hebh Jamal, a 16 year-old New York City high school student and member of the Arab American Association of New York (AANY). (Jamal was featured in a recent\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/15\/nyregion\/young-muslim-americans-are-feeling-the-strain-of-suspicion.html?_r=2\">New York Times\u00a0<\/a><\/em>article\u00a0on this issue and the psychological, emotional, and social toll of anti-Muslim bigotry on young American Muslims.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I&#039;m more than my hijab\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uWuE8EilAZY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Bigotry has roots in widely accepted policies<\/h3>\n<p>While terrorist attacks and global tensions unquestionably incite prejudice, there are other insidious drivers at work\u2014namely, more than a decade of policies that officially sanction the marginalization of American Muslim communities. Official forms of discrimination pervade law enforcement, schools, and immigration policy, institutionalizing a system of bias that makes bigotry against Muslims acceptable in this country.
